Kalkan Old Town Guide: What to See, Do and Where to Stop

TRAVEL GUIDE · 6 min read

Kalkan is a small town on Turkey's Turquoise Coast, in the Kaş district of Antalya province, built on a steep hillside that tumbles down to a working harbour. Once a quiet fishing village, its old town is now a tangle of whitewashed houses, cobbled lanes, and bougainvillea-draped balconies — small enough to explore properly in a day, and worth a slower evening besides.

Wander the Old Town

The best way to see Kalkan is simply to walk it. The old town's streets are steep, narrow, and largely pedestrian, lined with boutique shops, small galleries, and terraces spilling out from restaurants and cafés. There's no single route to follow — the pleasure is in getting slightly lost, following the slope back down toward the water, and stopping wherever a view or a shopfront catches your eye.

Day Trips From Kalkan

Kalkan makes a good base for exploring the surrounding coast. Kaputaş Beach, a striking cove beach tucked beneath the coastal road, is a short drive away and one of the most photographed spots on this stretch of coastline. Further along, Patara Beach — one of the longest beaches in the Mediterranean — sits beside the ancient ruins of Patara, once a major Lycian port city. Inland, Saklıkent Gorge offers a cooler day out for anyone looking to escape the coastal heat. Boat trips along the coastline are also easy to arrange directly from Kalkan's harbour, taking in coves that aren't reachable by road.

The Harbour in the Evening

As the day trips wind down and the light starts to soften, the old town shifts gears. Shops stay open later, terraces fill up, and the harbour — busy with boats through the day — settles into its evening rhythm. This is when Kalkan is at its best: warm stone underfoot, the smell of grills starting up, and, on a clear evening, a sunset that the whole town seems to turn toward. If you want more detail on that particular hour, we've written a separate guide to the best sunset spots in Kalkan.

Where We'd Suggest Stopping for Dinner

If your evening walk takes you up from the harbour rather than along it, look for Taraça Lounge & Kitchen — a rooftop terrace restaurant hidden down one of the old town's quieter alleys. It's built around small plates for sharing, handmade cocktails, and a panoramic view over the harbour and the Mediterranean sunset beyond it. Open every evening from 6:30pm, it's an easy stop to fold into an old-town evening without needing to change direction. You can see the full menu and story behind it on our menu page and about page.

A day in Kalkan is easy to plan. The evening is where the town really shows itself.
